Description

DER Boxing ring of Nibelungen is a cycle of four dramas of Richard Wagner inspired by Germanic and Scandinavian mythology and particularly of the Song of Nibelungen, a German poem epic of the Middle Ages. The myth belongs to the inspirations of the contemporary literature. The Ring of Nibelung, scenic festival in a prologue and three days is sometimes called in France the Tetralogy, but this title is in the process of disappearance: one speaks rather about the Boxing ring. Impassioned by the ancient Greek theatre, Richard Wagner borrows the structure in four parts of the ancient spectacles. He draws from it also this what he calls Gesamtkunstwerk, the “total art” where all is dependent: theatre, music, poetry and painting. He will go to build a theatre devoted to its work, the Palate of the festivals of Bayreuth. “A multi-media work before l' hour! ”, written Bruno Lussato [ref. necessary]. Fruit of almost thirty years of gestation during which the work is being transformed gradually into a gigantic allegory on the company, the policy, the economy and the capacity, the Boxing ring is qualified by its author of “scenic festival in a prologue and three days”. According to interpretations, it can indeed last from thirteen to sixteen hours. The poem counts more than 8.000 lines and puts in scene more than thirty characters. The music is built around more than 80 leitmotive - or “topics conducting” - musical different, without counting the derivatives.
