Description

*Listen to the Song of the Sybil, as the Seeress foretells of Ragnarok, the last great battle in which all creation, including the Gods and Goddesses will perish. The doom will be preceded by anarchy, war and crime among mankind... Amid earthquakes and falling stars, the monsters chained in the deep escape. The serpent of Midgard leaves the sea and waters pour over the earth. On the flood comes the ship Naglfar, made from dead men's nails and crewed by the Frost Giants from Nifelheim with Loki at the helm. The fire giant Surt and his army from Muspelheim join the war against the Gods, enroute shattering the rainbow bridge Bifrost. Summoned by the horn blast of Heimdal, the guardian of Bifrost, the Aesir and Vanir ride out behind Odin and his host of Einherjar, to fight the last battle of "order" against "chaos", to slay and be slain by their mortal foes. **What ever happened to the Goddesses in this final battle? None of the sources mention any of their fates, although all fights of the gods are described in great detail. Most of the stories might have been changed under the influence of Christianity. The ideal woman became not the "pride", "spirited", "strong" and "confident" Northern Goddess, but the "meek" and "mild" Virgin Mary. ***What is a possible scenario I rather believe in judging from the characterization of the goddesses described in many stories and from the role and position women had in Northern cultures? Freyja, Frigg, Sif, Saga, even Hel together with all other female energies not named, will surely participate in the great final conflict. They will combine their magic powers to shield their beloved ones, to aid with faith, to heal the wounds, to weaken the enemies and to protect their homes. They will send out the Valkyries to engage in battle and they will fall together with their husbands and lovers..... ..but surely not sit in their kitchen and patiently await the end of all existence! "Then appeared, in the field of Air, a helmed band of Valkyriur, their corslets were with blood besprinkled, and from their spears shone beams of light."

I agree about the role of christianity in destroying as much evidence of the Godess(es) as possible. Although the process began much earlier when the indoeuropean Thundergods became husbands of the Goddess first and then cast her away into the minor role of wife to The God. Evidence of this process can be found all over Europe and as far away as India. Back to reality: I like your Goddesses! They show strength, confidence, and beauty!
