Description

I took these day before yesterday center yellow black Common Name: Cloudless sulfur Scientific Name: Phoebis sennae eubule (Linnaeus) Order: Lepidoptera Adults of the alfalfa caterpillar, Colias eurytheme Boisduval, are commonly seen sulfur butterflies. Adults have a 2 inch wingspan and wings are yellow to orange-yellow with black markings along the wing margins (on males, markings are solid and in females, black markings are interrupted by spots). The caterpillar stages feed on leaves of alfalfa and soybeans, growing to 1-1/2 inch long with green bodies marked on each side with a thin white stripe in which a finer red line occurs. Life Cycle: Adults overwinter in south Texas. Females lay eggs on host plants. Caterpillars hatching from eggs develop through several stages before forming a smooth chrysalis suspended from a plant stem by its base and a silk thread. The Clouded Sulphur is found almost anywhere in the United States and Mexico. Its wings are lemon-yellow with a black border and spot on each forewing. The female can be very pale yellow, making it harder to distinguish from other types of butterflies. The average wingspan is 2 bottom right A skipper, (Lepidoptera: Hesperiidae) Description: Young caterpillars are greenish-white with an oversized black head. Mature larvae are smooth, olive green, tapered toward the back end and have a black head. The body is constricted just behind the head, making larvae appear as if they had a neck. Two or three chalky white spots occur on the underside between the back legs. The male butterfly is orange-brown with a single large black spot on each forewing whereas the female is dark brown with a few silver and orange spots on the forewings. The wingspan is about 1 inch. upper left Common Checkered Skipper Pyrgus communis Hesperiidae Spread-wing Skippers (Pyrginae) upper right is a Buckeye I believe. there are always many here this is the first time for me to the yellow one with the wings open and only because I was able to catch in flight first time to catch 3 butterflies in flight with another eating nectar thanks for viewing and any comments

I am always enthralled by your macros. The insect images are always the most amazing, due, I believe,to your skill in being able to capture their intricacy and detail. These are no exception--excellent studies, Richard!!!!!
