Description

There was debate in the past on how defining the limit enters a planet double and a system planet/satellite. In the majority of the cases, the problem does not arise, because the satellite has a relatively low mass compared to that of its planet host. In particular, with the exception of the systems Ground/the Moon and Pluto/Charon, all the satellites of the solar system have masses lower than 0.00025 times that of their planet host. From another side, the Earth and the Moon have a ratio of mass of 0.01230, and Pluto and its Charon moon a ratio of mass of 0.147. A point of view generally accepted to make the difference between a system planet/satellite and a double planet is the localization of the centre of mass of the two objects (that the one calls the barycentre). If the barycentre is not localised under the surface of one of the two objects, one generally indicates it like a double planet. In this case, the two objects orbit around; a central point placed in the space which separates them. According to this definition, Pluto and Charon would be regarded as a planet (dwarf) double, whereas the Earth and the Moon would not be it. In 2006, The Union Astronomique International briefly thought of defining in a clear way the " term planet double" , which in fact would have included Pluton and Charon, but this is'nt definition; was not finally ratified.
