Description

The Raffles, located on Beach Street, is the best known hotel in Singapore. It is an architectural landmark and has been classified by the government as part of Singapore's 'cultural heritage'. The Raffles was opened in 1887 by the Sarkies brothers during the height of the British Empire. It is mentioned in novels by Joseph Conrad and Somerset Maugham and recommended by Rudyard Kipling for its food. This picture was taken in January 1996 and later scanned. Sig, What an impressive and beautiful building! There is such a rich atmosphere just seeing this. Maugham and Kipling are both two of my favorite older writers. I read a lot of Kipling's stories to my now almost 16 year old grandson when he was just a munchkin. His favorite was 'The Elephant's Child' and of course by Maugham, 'Of Human Bondage'. A wonderful capture! I would say that this is a perfect picture. Lea
