Description

The actual date of the bonfire celebration is Nov 5th but the nearest W/E is often chosen for convenience. This celebrates the failure of Guy Fawkes and his group of conspirators to blow up the Houses of Parliament in 1605..more complicated story no doubt on line! As a child we used to have a bonfire in the near-by field and spent weeks collecting wood to build the bonfire, making a 'guy', replica of Guy Fawlkes to burn, a modest collection of fireworks to let off, and special treacle toffee to eat! Now, it usually large local bonfires and health and safety ruling supreme! Children still enjoy it all.
