Saturday, October 14 1914 7:00 PM.
I so look forward to my drives in the country and today was no different. I think sometimes John wishes he hadn't taught me to drive but he did and Lizzy and I have spent many wonderful hours together. It was a warm autumn day today and just perfect for a drive. The exhilaration of the fresh air blowing my hair and the unmistakable smell of autumns leaves are heavy in the air too. The country side passes by as if a dream and even Lizzy's roar becomes somehow distant as I think about the independence I feel and the wonderful solitude. She's a glorious old girl my Lizzy is and always treats me well.
Oh I fought the idea of learning to drive but finally succumbed and how happy I am that I did. How lucky I am to have a husband that allows me this freedom but has never asked me even once to accept the responsibilities that come with driving. He has never asked me to take the kids anywhere or drive in to town to pick something up. Thank you my dear sweet John.
I drove out well past the Braxton cross roads today. I just had to go past that beautiful and enchanting old house that I just adore. It has been empty for many years and it causes me to wonder what stories it has to tell. Oh it must have been the nest for a young and very much in love couple. I can almost see them laughing and playing in the yard and the way they look at each other, well I just know they are happy like John and I. The grove of trees surrounding the house and engulfing the road is spectacular this season. The colors all orange and yellow and red.
As I head for home my mind starts to wonder back to thoughts of making dinner and how much I enjoy that too. Tonight is fried chicken, mashed potatoes and fresh picked green beans from my garden. Of course my blueberry muffins and an apple pie for dessert. We will sit on the porch in our rocking chairs with a cup of coffee after dinner and talk about the kids and the week's events.
Oh my, it's Saturday night and that's our special night. I bought a new night gown the other day and I can't wait to surprise John when he sees me in it. Gosh I have to go; I think I hear him coming up the stairs...... ARH
