Description
This was once a tobbaco farm. The structure on the right was the klins to dry the picked tobbaco.
This area was one of the biggest Tobbaco areas in Victoria, if not the whole of Australia.
Now there are no more Tobbaco farms. The immagrants that worked them have gone as did the tobbaco farm.
In this area there is farmed nuts, wine, and probably some vegatable farms. Also Lavender and many 'in vogue' plants.
Fortunes were made and many came to work this land.
many lost the lot in a snap frost befor summer, to much rain, or the many deseases that the tobbaco plant could catch.
DDt, and many other chemicals were used to spray the tobacco plantations. Many in the neighbouring towns were of the opinion that the 'over-spray' ran into the water-ways of this area causing the drinking water to be poluted.
I believe it now against the law to farm, cultivate the tobbaco plant in this country. All of the tobbaco still used in this country is imported so I am told.
This photograph caught my eye as the lighting was such that the farm was highlighted amidst the rest of the landscape by the cloud formation.
It also reminded me of my childhood, playing in the very hot 'outhouses where the tobbaco was woven onto long wooden poles to be placed in the kiln where it would be 'fired' . it was then sold to be made into tobbaco products bringing very high prices to the grades of tabacco that were required by the many companies.
Thanks for viewing...
Have a great weekend..
