Description

Still in Battery Park, this is the Irish Hunger Memorial, commemorating the desperate plight of the Irish in the mid-19thc which caused many to emigrate to find a better life in the USA. It was opened in 2002, using stones, soils and native vegetation from the west coast of Ireland and stoones from different parts of the country. An authentic Irish cottage of the 19thc was created. We only visited it quickly as we left but it does repay a visit. Very thought provoking and worth a longer visit.

Very nicely presented. It is interesting what we are compelled to make memorials of.
