Description

There are moments in time, when it is impossible to tell the difference between the author and his creation. The book is not the person who wrote it, and yet, there is nothing more intimately autobiographical than any piece of written text. In a sense, one's body of work, is an indistinguishable thing from one's body. In this way, perhaps, text and flesh are one and the same: both are subject to edits and corruptions. Both may be burned or misjudged—as history has shown us. In Prague, I found myself immersed in a new life. I felt changes in my flesh, and those changes will continue, even when Prague lies far behind me. I came face to face with the phantom of a writer—one of my favorites, though I admit to having many favorite authors; because of this subjective and wholly non-physical contact, things have changed with me. I've stated—many times—that Prague is a city of thresholds, and perhaps the strangest of these is the liminal space between author and fictional text. It is an intriguing non-physical space to explore, and it is in a city like Prague—a city kind in its patronage of the arts—that these strange spaces may be explored. **** As always, thank you for reading and viewing, and commenting...hopefully you're off to a good week.

There is nothing more personal and revealing than the written word; photographs come close, but they can't get close to the center of a person's soul the way the arrangement of language can...together they create whole new worlds.

Thee is areal warmth about this shot and the feeling that you get when you look at the photo within the photo and read your thoughts hav ea resonance with me. I have my Grandfather's Wart Diaries from 1913 - 1919, He survived the full term, firts a s a war correspondent and then as an observer/pilot in 2 seater planes. The last survivor of No 5 squadron. As I read his thoughts I am transported to the Great War. He was more concerned as he wrote (whilst people were literally being blown up around him) that his pen was out of ink. That was how he survived - Thats the resonance I get here.

Your advice, dear artfriend is very exact, and each time I am writing a novel (in french) I know that a bit of my mind is in my text! So in an Abstract picture ! Great text and splendid shot !!!

What you say so eloquently is so true. I have written two novels and my soul, heart and flesh are in both and will remain there long after i am dust. This is also a very intriguing photo. He stares as us with such intensity and challenge and the candle illumination on his face brings him to life. CC

Words-windows to the soul. I love how you use Kafka so often; he pops up in the most amazing places!

Being from a literary family with a few authors, published and not, I find this very appealing and comfortable.

Ahh...one day someone is going to come along and take a similar photo of shelves filled with writings and books from your imagination, experiences and travels. Very well composed photo and narrative, Chip.

Such a lovely presentation Chip! And what a superb thought... how one becomes his own text in a sense, makes you think about the whole essence of meaning, and the whole meaning of essence..... This is truly a marvellous capture, the lighting, and that mystical glow..... absolutely radiant, and creates a certain special kind of mood and atmosphere--- a beautiful theme indeed!

Books are magical, and you've captured that beautifully here. One day I shall light a candle in the library for you, my friend.

Love your tribute to the place you love. seeing Prague has always been a dream of my life, since I started corresponding with a guy from there way back to 1961 or 62. He used to send me cards with city views. Lost sight of him in 1968 when all that happened. Long time ago. Thanks for brooding memories. An absolutely amtching photo. Well done, Chip. Nothing to add and nothing to subtract. Nikolay

Nicely orchestrated using the candle glow to illuminate the author's face. It kind of makes him a real presence in the room.
