Description
Many of you will know my good friend and namesake Dave (Magnus073). He made a picture for me this week which was really something special, and he is always ready to help anyone here. One of those rare unselfish people, always putting other people first, he looks after his sister who isn't in the best of health and dotes on his three young nieces.
As a 'thank you' I thought it would be fun to do something for his young nieces and also a bit different from my usual 'Castle fare'. I'd like to introduce some of the characters of 'The Hollowbridge Heroes', a book I am currently re-working. It was first published in the UK 10 years ago and now needs updating. (You may need to zoom in to see the verse). Here is the first character....
Melvin Molesworthy sighed contentedly, sat back in his tattered old armchair, and buttered another crumpet.
Although it was a baking summer's afternoon outside, within Melvin's small neat home, with it's shuttered and curtained single window, it might have been a cold winter's evening.
In the open hearth, a log was burning merrily away. A toasting fork with a fresh crumpet attached rested above the embers, while a kettle simmered on the little stove in the corner, ready to replenish the large brown teapot on the table. All was well with the world in Melvin's eyes, for all was well with Melvin.
These were the times that Melvin loved best. Being in a dim, firelit warm room with the world safely shut out. Away from the hustle and bustle of daily village life. Most important of all was the luxury of being away from the sun.
Melvin hated daylight of any sort, being a mole with very weak eyes and skin that tended to burn very easily. He wore a pair of coke-bottle-end type thick wire framed glasses to read with, and he covered himself up well when he was forced by necessity into the light.
These forays into the real world were, unfortunately for Melvin, unavoidable. They were warranted by his job as the sole news reporter for the Hollowbridge Weekly Gazette.
This post, albeit not the ideal one for such a shy, nocturnal soul as Melvin, was the only one which let the little mole fulfil his passion for writing. He was particularly obsessed with poetry. For under his alias as 'A. Bard', the editor occasionally allowed the inclusion of his peculiar dabblings. To have one of his works printed in the Hollowbridge Gazette was a great source of joy for Melvin. He hoped one day to be given a wider audience. A small regular column perhaps, or even a book.
He finished his third crumpet, took a slurp of hot sweet tea, and settled back to check his afternoon's work. Settling his spectacles on his nose more comfortably, and putting his slippered feet on a stool, Melvin returned to his final draft. He held it very closely to his pointed face as he began to read.....
Melvin sat back and rubbed his watering eyes. They were always watering and he promised himself for the third time that day to see about getting some new spectacles.
He put down the paper, buttered his fourth crumpet, and sighed deeply as he chewed, wondering how long it would be before his major poetic genius would be discovered. An occasional contribution in the the 'Gazette' would not be enough to launch the mole to fame and fortune.

I read the skin poem - quite something... it didn't mention the pimples or the bug bites we get - lol ...Dave is cool... he site mailed me last night, he remembered months ago a was thinking of vice... months ago... he remembered and site mailed me that he had heard from vice - how awesome of a guy is that??? AWESOME in all caps, that's how awesome.

I always loved "Wind in The Willows" and this is right up that path. As child I truly believed animals lived in little houses in a world of their own. Sadly I grew up, but a part me believes. This is a wonderful story and when the book is in updated print, please let us know. It is a beautiful story and scene for Dave and his family. A tribute to a great person and artist. Totally spiffy! :o) Love the poem and A Bard is talented person of many coats.

Excellent work Dave, I like the castle stories very much, but it is nice to have something different from you, and this is just fantastic. As you say one for the kids, I'm a sixty year old kid, and I enjoyed it very much thank you. Superb work and a wonderful dedication. Bravo!!!!!

And you had concerns about stepping out of your genre? Dave, how could you really? Writing for children is amongst the most difficult of all literature genres and you not only shine in prose but in verse. Totally delightful, I am sure the series and the forthcoming book will do well. And what better person to dedicate the first pic to than the master of childrens work our beloved magnus (Dave).

Aww, what a sweet and delightful gift for Dave's nieces! This is most charming, the story, the illustration, and especially that wonderful and witty poem. As soon as I saw the illustration, I was reminded of that charming book, "The Wind in the Willows", (which my mom is reading for the first time in her life). This is outstanding and now, I hope you will be the castle keeper and the teller of Mole tales. I am enthralled! Also, this is a wonderful dedication to a great person! ;) Lea
