Description

Nikon 7900 pocket camera, hand-held image. This title is in response to the title of my last posting (A cute fly). I felt like like I had to give equal time to all flies regardless of cuteness, lol. This is a Giant Robberfly and I think it may be Promachus rufipes. It is about 1 inch (25mm) long. I have seen these guys catch grasshoppers longer than themselves and so heavy that they could not fly with them. As with most Robberflies, they are pretty bold. This image was taken when this Robberfly landed on the sleeve of my sweater and was he not frightened off by my contortions while trying to get him in frame and focus. Thanks to those who take the time to comment. Lee

Those body details are great. Good pov and strong appeal for something so less-that-beuatiful. :-) Stellar macro.

Nobody can say you are not fair Lee, giving each little critter you see the same attention. I enjoy the ugly as well as the cute, especially when the detail is as good as this is. Exceptional macro under the circumstances, lol @ Ronnie and his imagination. Superb capture excellent clarity and detail. Bravo!!!!!

Lee, GREAT shot! Man that is one cool looking one. I love the colors on him. I would freak if one of those large ones landed on me...lol. Again, great capture, I love these things, maybe because I see them so rarely. Great job!

WOW! This is great; he looks like one of those helicopters used by the Russian military for...well...whatever fly-shaped helicopters do for the Russian military. The bristly fuzz, the details, and everything is superb. Cute or not, I like this bold critter. Great work, as always.
