Description
Here's something you don't see every day.
I went to a baby shower the other day, and my friends Dennis and Peri were there. Peri and I teamed up for one of the games, and we each won a little bag of Play-Doh and a little rubber duck. I took the Play-Doh for my three-year-old niece, and Peri took the ducks.
She immediately put the ducks on her head, and I immediately took a few pictures! She left them there for the rest of the day. We were visiting, watching Ben and Tarah open their gifts, folding tissue paper, generally having a good time.
We're just the kind of people who think it isn't at all strange to have ducks on your head.
Dennis, Peri's husband, was on the other side of the room standing next to the door. (For a quick getaway, I think. He was a bit uncomfortable with the whole baby shower thing.) There was a woman standing next to him who didn't know any of us, and they were visiting.
She looked across the room at Peri and said to Dennis, "That woman over there has ducks on her head."
Dennis said, "Yeah - that would be my weirdo wife."
"Huh."
Apparently that was the end of the conversation.
Don't you wish you had my life?
:)
..........
EDIT NOTE: I came home today and started reading comments, and realized that I should have explained a bit more! Apparently baby showers aren't common everywhere in the world. Who knew?
This is what you could expect at a baby shower:
The best friends, or the mother and aunts of the new mom-to-be, invite a bunch of people to come to someone's house for a party. The house is generally decorated with streamers and balloons and other baby-related things. This party takes place one to two months before the baby is due to be born.
Everyone brings gifts for the new baby. Clothes, diapers, car seats, blankets, little shoes, stuffed animals ... anything and everything a baby could want. (The gifts are the entire purpose for the party.) The grandmothers-to-be always go overboard and buy too much. Traditionally these parties are women only, but more and more they're doing "co-ed" baby showers. Men are not typically excited about this trend.
There's always food, including a cake. Everyone sits around eating and visiting, and then whoever organized the party gets everyone's attention and games are played. I don't think anyone actually likes these games, but none-the-less, that's what one does. They're all centered around babies.
For example:
Look at all the baby items on this tray for 30 seconds. The tray gets covered up, then you write down everything you can remember that was on the tray.
Candy bars are melted and smeared in disposable diapers. Look in the diaper and identify the candy bar. (This is truly disgusting.)
Unscramble the words on this list ... they're all baby related.
That sort of thing.
Then the gifts are opened, and the mom-to-be has one of her friends taking notes about what gift came from which person, so thank-you notes can be sent out later.
Once the gifts are all open, people visit for a little while longer and then everyone starts to leave. Like any party, a few friends stay to clean up.
I hope this description has been educational for those of you in other parts of the world! :)

You are a brave soul. I stopped doing baby showers years ago. The games are designed to make me look stupid. :-) Fun shot. Great story.

I have heard of wedding/engagement showers but I haven't a clue as to what goes on at one, never heard of baby showers though. when I first came across this shower wording, I thought it was done at the local swimming pool. Thats where I would go for a group shower. Mind you now I have had my bath ripped out and made into a wet room, I can get about six people in there if it came to it. I am guessing that a baby shower is intruducing the new born to selected friends, and in so doing geting presents for the baby at the same time. Please correct me if I'm wrong, I would like to know the real reason for them, and why they are called showers. Excellent capture of the ducks, interesting to know how she kept them there for the rest of the day. Certainly brought a smile to a few faces Tara, including mine. Bravo!!!!!
