Description

- Actu-Environnement.com - 31/10/2003 A second important solar eruption is produced, causing a new magnetic storm which was to touch the Earth whereas the effects of the preceding eruption still disturb the télécommunications. 'It is as if the Earth looked towards a giant gun pointed towards it by the Sun, which would have drawn two great blows in our direction' , explained John Kohl, astrophysicist of Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics, responsible of a spectrometer with ultra-violet on the space observatory euro-American of study of the Sun and his heliosphere SOHO.The Japanese space agency gave a report on the loss of communications with one of its satellites, Kodama, Wednesday at the beginning of this electromagnetic storm, most important since about thirty of years. The first storm had been caused by an solar eruption which has occurred Tuesday towards 06:00 (11h00 GMT), accompanied by a massive jet of ionized particles which reached the Earth Wednesday with 1:13 (6h13 GMT), ten of hours before the moment envisaged by the specialists. 'The geomagnetic storm don't put that 19 hours to reach the Earth, it is the one of the fastest storms of this cycle solar', explained the space meteorologist Larry Combs, of the NOAA. It is acted it was an extreme electromagnetic storm, classified G5, the existing highest level. These particles travelled to approximately 2.000 km/seconde. The eruption, filmed by SOHO, was localised in the central part of the Sun facing Terre. By precaution, the crew of the International space station received the order to remain on several occasions and for short periods this week in the Russian module of service Zvezda, better protected from radiations than the other modules from the ISS.
