Description

I bumped into this Sulpha-crested or Yellow-crested Cockatoo in an area of the zoo set aside for animals from Australia. These birds range throughout the various climates in Australia, from Far North Queensland beyond the Iron Range Mountains, as well as parts of the Snowy Mountains. They are also numerous in Adelaide and Southern South Australia and can be spotted north of Perth. Sulphur-crested cockatoos may no longer be imported into the United States as a result of the Wild Bird Conservation Act. However, they have been bred in captivity. The potential owner should be aware of the bird's needs, as well as how loud these birds can be and their natural desire to chew wood and other hard and organic materials. These birds are very long lived, and can live upwards of 70 years in captivity, although they only live to about 20-40 years in the wild. More info? One day I turned my Kawasaki ZR-1 ATP into Miami Airport looking for the supervisors of "cockroach corner" and out of the corner of my eye I spotted, Department of Agriculture-Exotic Bird Quarantine. YES!! I said to myself a perfect cover. Discrete inquiries yielded an address at the Koger Center. Years later I met a lady online who lived on the Logan River in Queensland. She had some very nice pictures of local cocatoos and lorikeets.

Awsome capture of this beautiful bird. Concerning the RAW-HDR stuff: It is always better to take three or more pictures for a real HDR, because you get much more information about the object than with just one RAW shot that you change in exposure afterwards. But the "raw way" is great, if you want to capture something that is moving or if you don't have a tripod with you. If you have questions, just ask, maybe I can help you :) I'm looking forward to seeing HDR pictures of you, have fun!

Looks like our avian friend is hanging on for dear life in this shot, Bill. Either that or glued to the side of the tube. Cool textures in the capture and solid information on this species of bird.

Neat capture Bill of a beautiful bird,.... these cockatoos have moved into suburban areas in a big way a rip apart timber railings, window frames & anything that amuses them. Farmers have a bit of trouble with them eating the seed of their crops as well. So be aware and keep an eye on the sky for the next invasion!!
