I think it might be Phlebia merismoides syn P radiata syn P aurantiaca. I've seen it on beech but my book says it's common on birch . Marvellous pics,Kevin, I LOVE the close up!

OMG its a killer alien fungus creature; RUN FOR YOUR LIVES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! But seriously; There are a couple of fungi that grow up in northern Minnesota that have an orange color (sometimes bright orange, if its rained recently), but none that break threw the bark like that, there is a tree growing orange fungi that looks like a scalop and usaly comes three or so in a patch and an inverted type of ground mushroom ware the top is flatend and the gills are in a curved angle tapering to the stem, sometimes the gills are kina wavy. The ground ones are really good to eat, especialy if you dry them and use them with other mushrooms in cooking.
