Description

Today I spotted this bright orange fungus running in ribbons all over a 12ft high silver birch stump. I thought it must be paint it was so luminous in the sun. In my little book I only know what it isn't, and I hate posting a natural subject without an ID. I know here at Rendo there are a few experts on fungi, so any ideas on what this is? I did a close up box within the image to possibly help ID this beauty. Many thanks for comments and Favs on my last post, much appreciated.

I think it might be Phlebia merismoides syn P radiata syn P aurantiaca. I've seen it on beech but my book says it's common on birch . Marvellous pics,Kevin, I LOVE the close up!

OMG its a killer alien fungus creature; RUN FOR YOUR LIVES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! But seriously; There are a couple of fungi that grow up in northern Minnesota that have an orange color (sometimes bright orange, if its rained recently), but none that break threw the bark like that, there is a tree growing orange fungi that looks like a scalop and usaly comes three or so in a patch and an inverted type of ground mushroom ware the top is flatend and the gills are in a curved angle tapering to the stem, sometimes the gills are kina wavy. The ground ones are really good to eat, especialy if you dry them and use them with other mushrooms in cooking.
