Description
There, there baby, it'll all be alright.
All you have to do is trust me.
Hush baby, it's OK. I know you're scared.
I understand. It's not easy.
But it's what you asked for.
This is what you need.
I'm honoured you asked me.
Yes, it will hurt. But only for a moment.
A brief flash as I bite in.
And as I drink, as your life flows out,
A cold.
But only for short time.
Before it's done.
I don't want you to be hurt any more.
So it will be as fast as I can make it.
But not too fast, not as fast as when I hunt.
That would hurt more.
Hmm? Yes, you could. I'd gladly go with you.
And show you how to make it hurt, the worst hurt imaginable.
That's OK, my love.
No-one would blame you. I certainly don't.
Are you sure this is what you want? What you need?
I didn't think you would, but I had to be sure. Come closer to me, my love.
Yes, I'll hold you. I won't let you fall.
Don't look my love, just rest your head, smell my hair, relax.
I can see the spot. Hear your heartbeat. Feel your trembling.
Your skin is so soft, that first splash of blood into my mouth so sweet.
Hush baby, don't worry. I have you. I won't let go.
Not ever.
Can you feel it now? The throbbing?
That's your heart trying to keep up. Trying to keep you alive.
It won't win, but it doesn't know that yet.
Be calm, my love, it will soon be over.
And then your life will begin anew.
Better than the one you leave behind.
No-one can hurt you any more.
Almost there.
Now it's your turn, my love. Drink your fill.
Before your end.
I give you a life to replace the one you have given me.
Drink, then you'll sleep.
When next you wake, you'll be safe.
I promise.
It's interesting how you can suddenly decide to revisit the past and bring it up to date in a new way. The image is based on one of the only two poems I ever tried to write (Dammit, Jim - I'm an author, not a poet!) - "A Gift" (1995), and a novella I wrote even earlier - "The Stranger" (1993). I leave interpreting all of this to the astute reader. That and I think I've used up enough space above already :)
