Description

The bathyscaphes are underwater machines d' abyssal exploration. In service of 1948 to 1982, they were the only able machines to reach more the great depths (- 10 916 meters, in the pit of Mariannes, on January 23, 1960). Invented by professor Auguste Piccard, a bathyscaphe is made up with a heavy spherical steel cabin, being able to accomodate two or three passengers, suspended with a float filled of light gasoline which compensates for the weight of the together according to the principle of Archimedes. The bathyscaphe goes down by gravitation and goes up by releasing ballast. Because of their size and their weight, the bathyscaphes could not be embarked and were to be towed by their ship of accompaniment. They were replaced by smaller and more handy submarines (sphere out of titanium and float in composite). The word bathyscaphe, invented by professor Piccard in 1946, comes from the Greek bathos (deep) and skaphê (boat). Before, professor Piccard used the word thalassosphère to name his invention. From where the title " Batyscaphe for space-time exploration" for this splendid machine seen of lower part in 3D.
