Description

This is the first time I've seen these killdeers up close, and they were in a parking lot, as you can see the asphalt. Later when I read about them I can see why they hang out in gravel or among pebbles to camouflage their eggs... Fascinating birds... enjoy... more info: The most widespread and familiar of the American plovers, the Killdeer is a common bird in farmyards, fields, and parking lots. Although many species of birds pretend to have a broken wing to lure predators from their nest, the Killdeer is the one most commonly seen performing this distraction display. They migrate only to escape snow, returning in spring before most songbirds. Killdeers are the ecologic equivalent of the lapwings of Europe. They eat beetles, grasshoppers, dragonflies, and other insects. The nest is a scrape in the ground lined with pebbles. The male makes several such nests, and the female selects one of them. The eggs are four in number, grayish in color, with black marks. The parents take turns incubating. Hatching takes place in 24 days. Both parents tend the chicks, which walk and feed themselves soon after hatching. Intruders are lured away from the nesting area by a “broken wing” distraction behavior, in which a parent bird limps or flutters along the ground, appearing to be injured.

Sounds like a very intelligent bird to lure others away from their nest. Interesting feather patterns. Excellent.... Aloha
