Description

The area of the Kampong Glam is the historic seat of the Malay royalty, resident here before the arrival of Sir Stamford Raffles. In the early days of Singapore it was allocated not only to the original Malays, but also to Javanese, Bugis, and Arab merchants and residents. It is said that in the Kampong Glam Cemetery Malay royalty is buried among the frangipani trees and coconut palms. Many of the graves have fallen into ruin and are overgrown, but more recent graves are tended, as is evidenced by the cloths placed over the headstones. In this photo most headstones show evidence of some remnants of cloths. This picture was taken in January 1996 and later scanned. Thank you for viewing and commenting on my uploads and a special 'Thank you' to those that may have added some of these to their favorites. It is Thanksgiving here in the United States and I wish everyone a 'Happy Thanksgiving'. All others, not fortunate enough to have a holiday today, I wish you a nice day. On an aside, we had our first rain here in Phoenix, Arizone in over 90 days, but it wasn't as much as forecast. At my house I received 0.16 inches. I guess most of the predicted amount got dumped on Southern California. But it was nice nevertheless, two days with overcast skies and a high yesterday of only 66F. It won't be very long before I and other locals will complain about it being too cold lol, Sig...

You can't keep a good jungle down. It has taken over even the royal marbles.

I got the report today that the washes north of Phoenix are under flash flood warnings. My brother had planned to spend Thanksgiving driving around in the desert but had to give it up "just in case." I love cemeteries for the history they contain and this shot is really intriguing.

@PJ, I only received 0.16 inches. Other places received more, but we didn't get as much as was predicted!

It is interesting to see how people from different countries and cultures bury their dead, and all the differing customs as well, so thanks for sharing this one Sig. Some might call it morbid curiosity yet there are a lot of us that walk round graveyards with our camera's. I like to study the different kinds of head stones, and all the different kinds of monuments. Some of the stone masons from years gone created some awesome headstones, and it to these that I am most atracted to. Excellent capture Sig and an informative narrative as well. Bravo!!!!!
