Description

East Africans were last night treated to a rare sight in the skies when two planets Venus and Jupiter courted the crescent moon for several hours, in a rare close grouping of the three brightest planets. In the phenomenon, the crescent moon appeared with the two planets just close to it as brightly shining stars. The phenomenon happens when Venus, the second closest planet to the sun and seemingly stuck just above the horizon for a couple of months, finally gains altitude in December getting in close quarters with Jupiter, which is headed downward. The big planet will be half as high by December 31, when it has its second close encounter of the month. The next time the three will be as close and visible as this week will be November 18, 2052

Ah ha, Glad you captured this. Good shot. It was too cloudy here for me to see this tonight. If you get another opportunity, try a faster shutter speed you will like the results even more. The moon and stars in this configuration reflect a great deal of light...the faster shutter speed eliminates the brilliance and gives you resolution of the moon's surface...even in this phase. Well seen... Bill

Excellent capture Santa... You really got it so well! I spent about half an hour outside playing with my 500mm lens on different exposure settings to capture this rare phenomena!!!!! Switched off all the lights in and around my house to try and minimize light polution... and all of this after driving back from Swaziland and being dead tired.... What us photographers wouldn't do eh????

Awesome to see this from a different point of view, what a capture! And thanks for your text, I didn't realize that it was such a privilege to witness this event although it did feel very special, I felt a lot of harmony when looking at it, I saw what Dave2112 captured being on the East Coast of the US and it was so beautiful.
