Il existe déjà en français de belles études sur la vie et l’œuvre de John Keats ainsi que plusieurs éditions de ses poésies. Ce n’est que justice, car on atteint là à un des sommets de toute la poésie anglaise et pas seulement du mouvement romantique même si, de son vivant, Keats ne fut guère reconnu. L’épitaphe qu’il s’était choisie : "Ci-gît un dont le nom fut écrit sur de l’eau" ; son refus de toute forme d’allégeance de la poésie à toute autre mission que l’essentielle : révéler la beauté en appliquant la puissance de l’imagination à tous les aspects de la vie, lui ont permis de gagner définitivement son procès en appel.
There already exists in French of beautiful studies on the life and the work of John Keats like several editions of its poetries. It is only justice, because one reaches there with one of the tops of all the English poetry and not only of the romantic movement even if, of alive sound, Keats were hardly recognized. The epitaph which it had chosen: " Here-to lie one whose name was written on water" ; its refusal of any form of allegiance of poetry to any other mission that the essential one: to reveal the beauty by applying the power of imagination to all the aspects of the life, allowed him to gain its appeal definitively.
