Description

A wonderful, warm summer evening in San Gimignano, Tuscany. Good food, good wine and a wonderful atmosphere. This picture was taken in July 1997 and later scanned. Thank you for viewing and commenting on my uploads and a special 'Thank you' to those that may have added some of them to their favorites. It was in Tuscany about 600 years ago that the Renaissance began, and its effects have been felt throughout the world. The works of Michelangelo, Donatello, Leonardo da Vinci and other 15th and 16th century Tuscan masters still influence artists around the globe. Tuscan architects - notably Brunelleschi, responsible for the magnificent dome of Florence's cathedral, and Alberti, who designed the facade of the city's Santa Maria Novella church - have influenced architects through the centuries. The Etruscans, who had been in Tuscany since the 8th BC, were usurped by the Romans and eventually the Lombards (Lonely Planet, Italy, 1993). When strolling through these towns, there is evidence of the influence of all these periods, and, combined with beautiful warm summer weather and the excellent Italian cuisine and wines it creates an atmosphere that is hard to find anywhere else in this world.
