I tried to find information on this particular tile (is this considered a tile?) but couldn't. I'm intrigued by the figure in a jaguar/leopard-like skin with wings. He seems to be carrying a large quill or group of quills. I thought perhaps Toltec but then thought maybe Mayan... But I couldn't find a study of what this meant and the different figures used. About 18 years ago, I returned a box of what my father called "kitchen gods" (varieous deity heads from 2 to 4 inches high, carved in stone) to the Mexican Consul for transport back to the National Museum. I had only sketchy information on where they had been aquired as my father traveled there in the 1930 and was interested in the ancient culture. He bought a few in a small village only 2-3 miles from the ancient city and found another 4-6 while walking the area. He treasured these. In spite of telling me not to return them after his death, I felt an obligation to do so. They were so very precious to me and I adored them. I should have listened...the people at the Consulate seem to have "lost them" or at least all follow up inquiries have brought questioning looks and no knowledge or any such thing being turned in to them. I was assured my father's name as the original finder of the objects was to be put with the display when they reached the museum. Funny, the Consul couldn't even tell me which museum they were being sent to... there are so many near Mexico City and it was the government's choice of which one would take them. It is a sad thing. But this photo, as you might guess, in not sad at all. I do wish I could find out more about this. Your photo is excellent and really brings home the flavor of the artist.
