De toren is ontworpen door Jia Huan Cheng, werkzaam bij Shanghai Modern Architectural Design Co. Ltd. De bouw van de toren begon in 1991 en was voltooid in 1995. Het is de hoogste toren in de Volksrepubliek China met 468m lengte.
De toren omvat in het totaal 11 bollen: grote en kleine. De twee grootste bollen volgens de lengterichting van de toren hebben een doorsnede van 50 m (onderste) en 45 m (bovenste). De verbindende cilindervormige kolommen zijn elk 9m in doorsnede. De kleinste bol bovenaan de toren heeft een diameter van 14m.
It was designed by Jia Huan Cheng of the Shanghai Modern Architectural Design Co. Ltd. Construction began in 1991 and the tower was completed in 1995. At 468 m (1,535 feet) high, it is the tallest completed tower in Asia, and the third tallest tower in the world after the CN Tower and the Ostankino Tower. It was also the tallest structure in China from 1994-2007, when it was surpassed by the Shanghai World Financial Center. The Oriental Pearl Tower belongs to the World Federation of Great Towers.
The tower features 11 spheres, big and small. The two biggest spheres, along the length of the tower, have diameters of 50 m (164 ft) for the lower and 45 m (148 ft) for the upper. They are linked by three columns, each 9 m (30 ft) in diameter. The highest sphere is 14 m (46 ft) in diameter.

Schitterend gedaan. XD zoals jij het toepast is het virtuele Meccano van vandaag. Interessante toelichting ook. Wonderlijk land en onvoorstelbare tegenstellingen. Ze zijn heel wat mans daar in China! Toch heb ik het vermoeden dat de architect bij het ontwerp aan het Atomium heeft gedacht.
