Description

This B-52 is taking of with water-injection at Anderson AFB, Guam, Mariana Islands, Micronesia. Certain older model B-52s used water-injection for take-off when maximum thrust was required. On a KC-135A tanker, which used J-57 engines, similar to some models of the B-52, for the initial 2 minute take-off run 650 gallons of fuel, plus 650 gallons of distilled water were used. This provided 1) more thrust, 2) more noise, and 3) much more smoke. Engines with water injections are no longer being used. This picture was taken in April 1988 and later scanned. Thank you for viewing and commenting on my most recent upload. I appreciate the comments. I was in the Air Force, and I think we were much better off than guys in the Army or Marine Corps in Vietnam. I did not suffer any adverse after effects from my deployment, but then I really did not experience that much. As my much younger buddies fondly tease me with a quote I had made, 'I was blessfully unaware of what was going on over there', referring to the big picture, Sig....

saw something similar to this one time, it was an AC130 doing a Jato Jet assisted takeoff, that was noisy enough, but this is a much bigger aircraft, great capture Sig!

Sure you did know where to stand to capture a very fine shot as a huge plane takes off. I only can imagine a sound but I guess it was slight a thrill.
