Description
My brother Matt got married this past year, and as a Christmas gift I'm collecting the wedding photos into a calendar (which I'll print at CafePress). For this scene, I created a vector version of the linked hearts that appeared on their wedding invitations, and then extruded them into the silver ornaments you see here. I also created a pair of simple gold rings to provide another metal texture. The background is an African wood texture that I downloaded from Strata's Website a few years ago. And the other images, ar, of course, scans of their wedding photo and invitation.
Getting the right angle and lighting proved to be more difficult than I thought. My wife wanted less of an angle, whereas I wanted to see more (she won). This created a problem with the lights washing out the details on the bride's dress, but I finally managed to work it out.
By the way, to add a hint of realism, I converted the image planes into bezier surface and edited them to provide just a little curve along one or two edges. This (I hope) makes it look less perfect, as though the paper had been handled a bit and curved slightly, rather than looking like perfect, crisp computer images. Render size was 6200 pixels wide (this is for hi-res printing: 17x11 inches at 400 dpi). Additionally, the large size helped make sure that none of the lettering on the invitation was lost (it's also a hi-res texture, about 1500 pixels wide, if memory serves me). Also, the extra space at the top is required by the calendar specifications: they need the space for a wire coil so you can flip the pages.
The text was added in Photoshop, and when things slow down I'll probably post the linked hearts to the Freebies section here at R'osity. The interior of the calendar, by the way, will be done only in Photoshop. I really don't have time to whip up a good 3D image for each month.
All in all, I'm pretty pleased with the way it came out, but I may take one more pass at it, if I get the time.
