Description

the car and background are both in Missouri.the car belongs to a restaurant in Branson thanks for looking and any comments The Henry J was an American automobile built by Kaiser-Frazer Corporation and named after its chairman, Henry J. Kaiser. Production of six cylinder models began in July, 1950, and four cylinder production started shortly after Labor Day, 1950. Official public introduction was September 28, 1950. The car was the brainchild of Henry J. Kaiser, who sought to increase sales of his Kaiser automotive line by adding a car that could be built inexpensively and thus affordable for the average American in the same vein that Henry Ford produced the Model T. The project also included a lot of government "designing" as various provisions of the 1949 government loan to Kaiser-Frazer specified various particulars of the vehicle. Kaiser-Frazer would be in violation of the loan terms unless the car in its base form retailed (including Federal tax and retail delivery preparation charge) for no more than $1,300.00. It had to seat at least five adults, it had to be available for retail sale no later than September 30, 1950, and had to be capable of going at least 50 miles per hour for sustained periods of time http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Henry_J

So this is the prototype for tomorrow? I knew one that was blue not too long after 1950. It was driven by someone a few years older than I. It was his mother's car. He always had a sardonic smile, always...

Great photo. Love the coloring. I remember this car well...by the age of 10 I was a carnut and this car came out that year. I'd have to check this but I'm 99% sure this car was sold in part through Sears Roebuck. The inside was absolutely Spartan. The seats looked like medal benches with thin padding to give the passengers the bare essentials of comfort. It never was a big seller. But it is "cute". Bill

If memory serves, one could order a Henry J "kit" from the Sears catalogue and finish building it in your own garage! Cool shot of a one of a kind car.
