Description
Lisbon. I am not a believer, but I am usually very respectful of other people's beliefs. In Portugal I had a hard time, it was a very poor country where all the gold from America was spent in golden churches and convent/palaces, and where religion bordered and borders dangerously with superstition. We avoided Fatima, but were nevertheless caught in immense traffic jams of pilgrims going there etc. This shot is of reliquaries, exposition of a collection of body parts of saints set into busts or wooden limbs. Nice, but gory, and hard to accept as a valid religious manifetation (at lest for me).

The nuns where I went to grade school were from Portugal. I'm pretty sure they believed all us little American brats were going straight to hell. They worked very hard to win us some reprieve. No wonder there are so many great surrealists from this part of the world. Gilded disembodied limbs behind glass! Bizarre!
