Description

0005.gifEuphorbia pulcherrima, commonly named poinsettia. Across North America, poinsettias are typical Christmas decorations in homes, churches, offices, and elsewhere, available in large numbers from grocery, drug, and hardware stores. In the United States, December 12th is National Poinsettia Day. The plants' association with Christmas began in 16th century Mexico, where legend tells of a young girl who was too poor to provide a gift for the celebration of Jesus' birthday. The tale goes that the child was inspired by an angel to gather weeds from the roadside and place them in front of the church altar. Crimson "blossoms" sprouted from the weeds and became beautiful poinsettias. From the 17th century, Franciscan monks in Mexico included the plants in their Christmas celebrations.

Beautiful work! I wish you a Merry Christmas. I like your story with this one and I didn't know they are called "Star of Bethlehem." I knew I misspelled mine as soon as I saw it, though. Oh, well. Hehe.

When I lived in Texas, these were a common sight year round...not always in bloom like this though. I couldn't believe it when I noticed several coming on voluntarily in the yard. I whacked them but they started appearing everywhere! I finally must mowed over the ones in the grass and left the ones growing along the side of the house. Funny, but when I try to grow them in pots, they die every time. LOL
