A Christmas Story It’s been a tradition in my town for Santa to pay a visit to any disabled or injured children at Christmas. He always comes in a fire truck, lights blinking, siren blaring. One year when my son was 5, he was invited to join as Santa visited his friend down the street who was in a wheel chair due to an illness. It was a very big deal, and Jordan was so excited he could hardly stand it. We walked down the street and waited in front of his friend’s house with other kids who had also been invited. Pretty soon, we could hear the siren and see the lights and then---there he was!! It was really Santa, and he had his bag full of goodies for all the kids. There was a mad scramble, but everyone was polite and Santa made sure the kids got to talk to him and tell him their biggest wishes. As we were standing there, almost ready to leave, Jordan stopped and said, “Mom, look”!! And up the sky there was this big bright light, a shooting star perhaps, I’m not really sure. Jordan was beside himself, asking if I thought it was REALLY Santa. Then he looked at me, at the fire truck and back at the sky. And said, “Now I understand, the real Santa is so busy, he needs to have his friends go around like this and visit. Mom, we need to get home, Santa’s gonna come soon!!” He grabbed my hand and we walked back up the street. It was one of those sweet, wonderful moments in a child’s life and the fact it was my son and I got to see it makes it precious. For that’s what this season is all about, the magic, the innocence, the purity. Merry Christmas~~and may you feel some the magic of this season!!
