Description
Here is a view of the older west cell block. This was constructed of brick and mortar. This is the section used in the film Shawshank Redemption. The scaffolding you see in the distance was there when the prison was working. They used it to access the high areas for maintenance , painting, etc. This area is four levels high with open railings. Occasionally an inmate would have an "accident" and fall the distance to the floor below. Probably why the east side cell block is encased in steel bars.

Not a place I'd want to visit even though the lights in this image give the scene a sort of warm cozy feel....very nicely composed shot!

Is this Alcatraz? I've visited Alcatraz 12 years ago, and it looks the same to me. Brings memories of a great holiday to me. Great shot. RS

As mentioned previously, this contains a thousand plus words. How else can we understand what awaits the inmate burdened with the weight of time among his brethren? Your exposé does well to explain it. (pretty classy comment, eh?)
