Description

Just before we got the 'big' snow here in SouthWest Washington state, there was a period of extremely cold, at least to us it was, weather. One of the unique aspects of freezing weather, especially if it goes on for a while, is that the ground, especially bare earth, does an amazing transformation, it becomes a whole, unique and strange landscape. Water expands when it freezes and in the dirt, it causes objects to move in the path of least resistance, usually up. The result is that some areas just jut up with frozen dirt and rock while other areas do nothing. To say the least, it is unusual and when I saw it, I grabbed my mom's camera and took a few photos of it. This area is the section underneath the deck and it is usually smooth, but now it is frozen (back)ground. This was the photo used when I rendered the posting, 'Welcome the New Fae'. Rita, three_grrr, had expressed an interest in the background and so this is for her and the rest of you who were curious but didn't say so! Thank you for your comments and faves! Have a great Sunday! Mike

I hear ya on "unusual cold!" Wish I could be more sympathetic; it's been averaging -10 to -27 here with Wind Chills going 30 to 67 below zero. Extreme cold produces strange effects fer sure. Nice photo.

Cold!! Isn't it amazing how different a landscape can look when it is frozen to the core. The beauty is never erased, just enhanced!
