There's another book that topic called "The World Without Us". There were two shows that were spun off of the book. One was "Life After People" and "Aftermath: Population Zero". Both the book and the shows hypothesize what sort of changes would occur if Human civilization were to vanish suddenly. Neither the book nor the shows speculate what sort of catastrophe caused humans to suddenly disappear.
