It is quite a functional bridge, sheen or not. We were at Calaveras Big Trees and I noticed they had just soaked their bridges with linseed oil for preservation. They looked just like this, plus they were definitely smelling of the stuff. However, the linseed oil had soaked in, and it wasn't slippery.
