Description

This isolated thunderstorm occured during the monsoon in Arizona. The slight annual shift to the north of the ITC (Intertropical Convergence Zone) results in the inflow of moist tropical air from the Gulf of Mexico and the Sea of Cortez into the American Southwest, primarily Arizona, New Mexico and Western Texas. This moist air is lifted by convection, resulting in numerous isolated thunderstorms like this one during our monsoon from about July through September. These thunderstorms may drop an inch of rain or more in a short period of time causing normally dry washes to run for short periods of time. This picture was taken in Southeastern Arizona in July 1986 and later scanned. Thanks to Shari (tiziezzme) for post-processing this image for me! Thank you for viewing and commenting. I will hopefully comment tomorrow again. Getting ready for a short trip, Sig...

Nice catch! Beautiful composition and great information about the weather pattern. We saw it this summer, and it caused a lot of flooding in Texas around the time of Hurricane Ike this past fall. There's an excellent explanation of the ITCZ on Wikipedia
