Description
Artemis
Artemis was the Ancient Greek goddess of the forests and hills and was one of the most widely worshipped deities in the ancient world. Her latter day equivalent, during the Roman era, was Diana the Goddess of the hunt. In addition to the forest and hills Artemis was the Hellenic goddess of childbirth, virginity, fertility and the hunt. Later in Greek history she also became identified with Selene the Greek moon goddess and was often depicted with a moon crescent above her head (just as the Roman Diana eventually supplanted Luna as moon Goddess).
Artemis was the daughter of Zeus and Leto and Apollo was her twin brother. There are numerous myth and stories of her. She is usually portrayed as a strong woman and very often would punish people for their lack of respect for animals, vanity, ego, and pride. She was widely worshipped both under her name and by many others including; Aeginaea, Aeginaea, Agoraea, Kourotrophos, Kourotrophos, Cynthia and Phoebe. In many of these case she was depicted as a huntress and in art is usually shown with a bow, quiver, arrows and often deer. So widespread was her popularity and worship that the gigantic Temple of Artemis (what would be modern day Turkey) was constructed in her honor, this was one of the seven wonders of the ancient world.
In her many interpretations by different cults, locations, and names, she was patron to many "feminine" things such as virginity, chastity, child birth, fertility, midwives, nurses - it was often however tempered or overshadowed by portrayal of strong women (or some feel showing how women can be strong). Here she is usually seen as a huntress, sometimes a warrior but always a patron to wild animals. This is exemplified by how ancient Athenian girls approaching marrying age were sent to the sanctuary of Artemis in Brauron to serve the Goddess for one year. These girls were called arktoi, or little she-bears. Myth has it that this started after a young girl teased a bear and the bear killed her. The girls bothers killed the bear in retribution. Artemis was so enraged she demanded that young girls "act the bear" at her sanctuary in atonement for the bear's death.
Artemis (and later Diana) were very often subjects in Greek and particularly Roman art. For well over two thousand years these two have been a popular subjects in numerous art pieces be they paintings, vases or sculptures. In most cases she is depicted as a strong huntress, very often with wild animals. The popularity of these themes in art still hold, even to this day. In 2007, a Roman era bronze sculpture of "Artemis and the Stag" was sold at Sotheby's auction house for over $25 million.

Yep, I like her. I like her a lot in fact. Rick I always like your works of art but I have also come to really respect you as a fellow scholar. You do great work and a great service every time you put out an image. It is not usual to find someone gifted in both verbal and visual arts but you do well.
