Description

Ash Pit
I met Henry in 1987, I had to climb a ladder to the top of a roof and ask about any available apartments, I was moving to Alfred. We have been friends ever since. He was there as I struggled to find work, gave me summer work, made me smile--employed my husband..loved my family as if we were his own.. I will never forget the day Henry came to the apartment we rented from him to pick Mike up for a day’s work. My daughter at the time had just learned to walk, and since her birth, he was never inclined to hold her, skiddish.. so to speak. Henry was no small man, he was a man built like a lumber jack with the heart of all things good the world had to offer. Henry knelt down as Ash wobbled over…he reached down and picked her up, placed her on his knee and declared the house with two apartments in Alfred Station, “The Ash Pit” Henry was wonderful that way, naming his many properties after things he loved. Years of love and friendship, Henry Bauer was a staple at our home, he and Mike worked together for many years, driving an old Ford truck that could be heard coming for miles as the ladders rattled and squeaked. To this day, will never forget the moment he broke his bicep with a sheet of 3 quarter ply, sitting at the Dill Pickle and listening to him speak of how he would have moved that piece differently. I will never forget the day he brought me my puppy Sven. I lost Svenny 3 years ago this month at age 13, and before moving to Florida, each morning when Henry came, he had a special treat for Sven in his pocket…the only time EVER that Sven was permitted to jump up on someone (and boy he knew it too!) was with Henry. I bet they are playing as I type this out… I will never forget the many years of friendship, the wisdom, the love Henry shared with me, my husband and daughter—My heart goes out to his beloved family. Thank you Henry, you will be dearly missed If you are one of the many thousand of individuals who’s lives were touched by Henry Bauer, you can read his story here, and leave a comment for the local’s that loved him..
