Description

Those green flashes on Mars observed from Earth? They were the muzzle-flashes from the vast Space Guns that the Aresians used to propel their transport cylinders towards Earth. This is a test render of the gun and its loading crane. Gun, crane and tripods all built in Truespace and imported into Bryce. Thanks for looking. Iain

The space gun is from William Cameron Menzie's film THINGS TO COME, right? I loved the way this immense device had an anachronistic aiming tab on the end of it.

Super modeling. I wonder, though: would that launcher load down the barrel, or from below like a breach-loader? Looks really cool like this, though.

The cylinders are loaded into the barrel using a powerful electromagnet. Got the idea from both the book and a novel called "The Space Machine", about a Victorian time traveller who uses a time/space machine to travel to Mars and gets into all sorts of scrapes before riding a cylinder back to Earth in time for the Invasion. The gun is loosely based on the one from the 30s film version of "Things to Come". For the final render I will add a facility and some means of transporting the cylinders from the armoury to the launcher. I added the forward gunsight as a nod to it ^_^ The tripods should be a bit smaller in the final render.

The tripods in the foreground give a sense of scale but I've a couple of suggestions for making the gun itself look even more massive: - lower your PoV to almost ground level; - add more detailing (maybe through displacement maps?) on parts of the model. They did this in Star Wars (inventing the term Greeble I think) to make the big ships look REALLY big! I hope this is helpful - a great image anyway!
