Description
I posted an earlier version of this, without the lettering, in the 3D Max gallery. It's in 2D now because it's more 2D than 3D at this point. I also post it as an example of what it's like to work with clients.
In the original, the bike was red. The author and editor wanted it blue. So I rendered just the bicycle, changed to blue, against the original render as a background. Original render = 15 hours. Just the bike = 5 hours. Hey, it was a choice.
After that, the editor wanted either the bike lightened or the tiles changed, as the blues were too close. So I changed the hue in Photoshop because it was way easier to change the tiles.
I wanted the image to look painterly, more like watercolor than 3D. That involved a lot of post work in Photoshop. There are something like 10 layers in the PSD.
The hard part for me is always getting the lettering right. The scene is set in two eras, and the art deco fountain sets the mood. I experimented a lot with fonts until I got one I liked, though it isn't art deco, and then ran a bunch of effects on that to make it pop. The author's name really couldn't be in the same font, so I chose a simple font. The color for that was a hard choice as well. I went through red and blue and purple and so on. I normally dislike green, so I rarely use it for anything but things that are normally green. But I tried it and the green seems to harmonize well with the rest of the image, and balances well.
All in all, I'm quite pleased with it. Of course, I'm still waiting for final opinions from the author, the editor and the main editor, so there may be more fiddling lol.

Looks great. If I was browsing a bookstore and saw the cover art would pause to have a closer look and that is what you want the cover art to do.

The fountain background has lots of nuances like weathered stone. It's out of this world!!! tips hat For my taste, there are too many colours, though. You explained why. Still. Gio
