Wizard vs. knight is a compelling theme, even when the competition is selective rather than combative. The mind must encompass some overall objective for the society. How can it set the points of crisis response? Can the timing ever tolerate what appears to be delay as the wizard acts immediately against enemies that won't be met in the field for weeks. In the bible it is lepers who report the enemy has decamped and the guard at the city gate who says "there would have to be windows in heaven for that to be true!!"
