Description

An Andrea Palladio's Villa again! The Villa Foscari at Malcontenta, also known as the Villa Malcontenta, by Andrea Palladio was built for the Foscari, one of Palladio's wealthiest clients. Unlike other patrons who cut costs wherever possible, the Foscari asked Andrea Palladio to turn-up the architectural volume on this building so that it would truly reflect the importance of the family and its role in the history of Venice. The Villa Foscari at Malcontenta was built during the 1550's, and in a way represents the transition of Andrea Palladio to his own unique style. The rear, southern-facing facade, is almost slavish copy of the work of Guilio Romano at the Palazzo Te in Mantova. But, the main facade is true Palladian, and it holds the viewer in awe of its beauty and magnitude. The interiors are full of frescoes by Giovanni Battista Zelotti and Battista Franco. Nowadays, the Villa Foscari, or Villa Malcontenta is as famous for its legends as it is for its design by Palladio. One legend has that one of the Foscari brothers banished his wife to live in the Villa after she led a rather libertine life in Venice. But, this is just a legend since at that time (1418) the Foscari didin't possess land on the location. Others say that the name Malcontenta comes from the hamlet in which the Villa Malcontenta is located. The hamlet has always been known as Malcontenta, because in the old days thieves and robbers "Malcontenti" in Italian (disgruntlend), used to seek haven in the nearby marshes. Probably the name Malcontenta came from the floods of the river Brenta. At that time in this place the Brenta's flood was very caotic and untamed, then in the official documents of the Venetian Senate it is called "male comptempta" (unleashed). In 1444 Venice was even more worried by the Brenta's flood because the river lime was troubling the seaways and filling the lagoon. So the Venetian Senate decided to deviate the river but the floods continued as usual. They attempted to deviate the river once again making the cut at Malcontenta were the white waters started. Also this cut was almost unsuccessful and the place got the nickname of "Fossa dei Malcontenti" instead of "Fossa de la Malcontenta " (Ditch of the Discontent Ones instead of Ditch of Unleashed Waters , in Italian the sound is very similar). After the fall of the Venetian Republic in 1798 and of Napoleon in 1815 the place went to Austria and the Villa became a military hospital. The Austrians destroyed some of the buildings and the balaustrade on the main facade. When the Austrians left, the Villa was acquired by the Landsberg, a Brazilian family. Nowadays it belongs again to the Foscari family. The Foscari are famous also because of Byron's tragedy "The Two Foscaris" and Verdi's opera.

a fascinating mixture of architecture with Poser, a fine depiction of these two souls on a boat, the regalia of office and societal stature is captured in your human postures, and the overall image has an air of pomp & circumstance mixed with a sense of nostalgia. And your greens & yellows & pale golds are striking. An original & creative way to evoke a scene from history & legend. Very nice work!
