Description

Easily the best-known Hellcat of them all, it was an early production F6F-5 that retained the windows behind the cockpit as per the F6F-3 a feature deleted on most 'dash fives'. As an air group commander, Cdr David McCampbell was able to fly this assigned aircraft on nearly every mission, and Minsi III lasted far longer than either of his previous Minsis. Although McCampbell lost his logbooks after the war, it is estimated that he scored 20 or more of his 34 confirmed victories in Minsi III. Sadly, this machine was lost in an accident in December 1944 whilst being flown by McCampbell's replacement.
