Description

At 0630 hours on May 3, 1942 Operation Bowery commenced. After losing his auxiliary fuel tank, Pilot-Officer J. A. Smith successfully landed his Mk V Spitfire on the deck of CV-7 USS Wasp. Smith stood on his wheel brakes and stopped just a few feet short of the forward edge of the flight deck. At the request of Prime Minister Winston Churchill, the USS Wasp and the British carrier - (converted Chilean dreadnought) HMS Eagle were loaded up with RAF Spitfires in an attempt to replenish the dwindling number of fighters available for the defense of the island of Malta in the Mediterranean Sea. sounds like you're getting underway with modeling..looks like this was before armored flight decks. All I know about the Malta campaign was a book called 'Stringbag', which was an entirely different aircraft...;) great work.
