Hi Everyone :o) A while back I saw this pic that Rembrandt had painted of himself and found it to be quite intriguing and loved it....I always think it's cool to see the face behind the art and to learn about what went on in the personal lives of the great artists. Immediately thought, "That's gotta be a Rembrandt!" I like how you blended it into a background that is consonant with his work: light and shadow. My post ever was a tribute to Rembrandt. Excellent work Mina!!!

Thanks for the link, such an intriguing artist. I love that he's laughing. Makes you wonder if he was a happy fellow or he thought it funny to paint himself....or did he change the painting in some way that was a joke to himself that we may never know?

Rembrandt did a laughing portrait late in his life too, if I find a good URL I'll give it to you...how nice that you included him here in your always bursting gallery (filled with so many loving references to musicians, artists & writers): It's his beautiful 'lion's face' smiling and leaning back in happiness; and you've surrounded him with what appears to be a receding series of inner journeys, as if he's reflecting with us (or we with him). You may know, but he reached his peak of fame midway, and spent the rest of his life in poverty & anonymity, with his beloved Hendrijke who he painted & drew beautifully (Woman Asleep at a Chair—something like that—is one of his greatest drawings), and in that dark period he turned out some of the most inward and spiritually moving work in the entire western world (much of which never sold in his lifetime). His impasto was so rich you could die, and his golds & lights emerging out of those rich darks were the soul itself emerging out of the darkness. Here you have that deep soul surrounded by penetrating dark & light (it almost feels like that famous scene from Vertigo with the spiraling staircase); and you've played with aging-of-a-painting beautifully. Very imaginative and caring of your chosen subject...

Oooo...a killer piece, Mina! I love the sense of infinity, the textural elements, the aged nature of it, and, yes, the gridded tiles. And, the rose is a perfect addition..a necessary homage somehow. Awesome work, mon soeur du coeur!
