Description

ENCYCLOPEDIA GALACTICA Edition 428193 - Earth English Civilization Humanity: Project Saphaea Project Saphaea is an on going programme of space exploration implemented by the human constitutional domain named the Atlantica Commonweath *. Amongst humans the project is commonly referred to as The Commonwealth Stellar Survey, C.S.S. or by comparable translations. The project's purpose is to fully explore all star systems, objects and phenomena of interest within and nearby Humanity's Sphere of Influence **. A region of space approximately 500 light years *** across and estimated to contain over 1 million stars. The survey is the first direct and systematic examination of Humanity's region of the Milky Way Galaxy since the time of Civilization Isis Elder (over 2.1 billion years ago). As such, its findings are of great interest to other members of The Community ****. The study is carried out through the utilization of classical astral observation, long range Q and R filament EM spectral sensing, followed eventually by robotic and then manned expeditions. Automated missions often involve self sufficient Floater Bot ***** teams which are designed to spend several years (27 years in one case) studying any one system. Bot teams consist of at least two units and as many as twelve for one mission. The figure above depicts a C.S.S. Floater Bot surveying the surface of Glacias D Minor (EGO 1703-00000192041). This is the smaller of the large twin satellites that closely orbit Glacias D (EGO 1703-00000188545). Glacias D itself is a class 'P' *** purple dwarf (also called a brown dwarf in older catalogues) which distantly orbits a trinary star system anchored by the class 'B' blue giant star Glacias (EGO 1703-00000151719). The image was recorded by a partner floater bot which jointly explores this moon. Automated explorations lay the ground work for subsequent manned missions. Within the Sphere of Influence, missions regularly utilize scientific reconnaissance vessels called Starsaucers *****. For deep space missions beyond the Sphere of Influence, larger, faster mission specific probe ships are constructed. As of the issue of this edition, the survey has been active for sixty-two (62) years. During this period the project has charted 152207 planets orbiting 14587 stars with 2757 being explored directly. Known life bearing worlds *** number two hundred and thirty-nine (239) including Earth (EGO 1703-00000000416) and Europa (EGO 1703-00000000519). A further fifty-two (52) have evidence that they were once life bearing including Mars (EGO 1703-00000000905). No other non-Terrestrial intelligences have yet to be discovered that are native to Humanity's Sphere of Influence. Though artifacts confirmed to have originated from Civilization Isis Elder ****** have been found on two sub-planets within this region - EGO 1703-00000214661 and EGO 0110-02092017134 (listed as EGO 1703-00000134715 in earlier editions). The project's name 'Saphaea' is the name given to a medieval astronomical device called an astrolabe. The 'Saphaea' type astrolabe was developed by the (human) 11th Century astronomer Abu Ishaq Ibrahim ibn Yahya Al-Zarqali. I was just listening yesterday to a program on NPR (National Public Radio) about the Discovery Channel Telescope, and how it would be able to tell scientists which nearby planets could contain life. It was very interesting and reassuring to think that even at a time when we are not spending much on space exploration, we are still moving forward, albeit at a slow pace. That's one of the things I loved about this episode, that there was a feeling of progress and accumulation of data. The thought of all there is out there to know and discover is fascinating and it is fun to pretend to be in a time when more is known and an ENCYCLOPEDIA GALACTICA not only exists, but is in its 428193rd edition. Have you said who actually produces the encyclopedia? Very interesting description of Project Saphaea. 239 planets known life bearing worlds. I'd have my computer set up to get all news stories from the project as soon as they were issued. I love the image. Beautiful water, color, and light.
