Description

Anne Bonny was an Irish American pirate who plied her trade in the Caribbean during the 1700s. While in the Bahamas, Anne Bonny began mingling with pirates at the local drinking establishments, and met the pirate John "Calico Jack" Rackham, with whom she had an affair. James (her husband) found out and dragged Anne before Gov. Rogers to demand she be flogged for adultery and returned to him. There was even an offer for Rackham to buy her in a divorce-by-purchase, but Anne refused to be "bought and sold like cattle." She was sentenced to be flogged, but later Anne and Rackham escaped to live together as pirates. Bonny did not disguise herself as a man in order to join Rackham's crew. In fact, she and Mary Read (another female pirate) helped Rackham steal the sloop at anchor in Nassau harbor and set off to sea, putting together a crew and taking several prizes. She took part in combat alongside the males, and the accounts describing her exploits present her as competent, effective in combat, and someone who gained the respect of her fellow pirates. Thought you'd enjoy a little story with your picture. I found this interesting historical tale on Wikipedia. I'm not sure how much of it is true but it makes for fun reading and for a cool picture idea! :) (Please zoom to see all the details.) Thanks soooo much for all your great comments and favs on my last picture. I appreciate it. Have a great Saturday! Add'l credits: Sea background came from RDNA

Well I for one loved the story so much Lori, and it made this amazing pic even better if that's possible. I mean who can resist a Irish gal all decked out in a outfit like this, I know I sure couldn't ;)

I always find images with stories to accompany them just so special. It adds so much to the image. Your image is rich and vibrant and does full justice to a woman who lived an extraordinarilly colorful life, especially for her time. You did exceptional job on making the satin look very real... great lighting and rendering technique.

Fantastic image of Anne! And you've even got the right Captain Jack's flag in the background! (the skull and crossed cutlasses was Rackham's ensign). There were documented events where she and Read did dress as men in attacks as was pointed out in one report where one individual noted that they had breasts (go figure). When Rackham was brought to trial both she and Read were sentenced to die as well but pled 'their bellies' as a defense as the English court did not have the power to kill an unborn child. Read died in prison of fever but no record exists of Bonny's execution. It is rumored she had her child and wed a weathy man who bought her freedom. Sorry to ramble grin Just adding a litle more to your tale if you don't mind - I'm a pyrate at heart and I LOVE this image!!! VERY well done!

Love the modern take on the story with your illustration. It enhances the romance feel of the pirate story. In reality, she may have been missing teeth. :) So, your version is probably much better than the original. Of cource, once again you have wowed me with the color.
