Description

The Basingstoke Canal is criss crossed be lots of Railway lines. In fact the railways were part of the demise and revival of the canal. By 1834, only 40 years after opening, the canal was already in a derelict state through lack of use, but it was revitalised more than once to serve local developments. It was used to carry materials for the construction of the London to Southampton Railway which was completed to Basingstoke in 1839. I used to live at Basingstoke for 6 years. Nice place. Worked for Snamprogetti towards the big AA building tower. More into disused railways than disused canals. Basingstoke still has very good rail and road connections.
