Description
I've always held some feelings of ambiguity about abstract depictions of the crucifixion - appreciating the artistic innovation, while wondering whether the subject itself was lost because of this. I resolved that if I were to do such a work, it must depict the theme with more than just vague suggestion.
This fractal took a lot of work to get just right. Initially aiming just to depict an empty cross, as I developed it, I started to see suggestions of the ribs, outstretched arms, and the bowed head (the dark area in front of the crossbeam, just left of centre.)
The complex structure of the cross itself symbolises the transcending of our 3 dimensions - the cross as the centrepiece of all existence, both seen and unseen.
Done in Apophysis 2.08 3D Hack. No postwork.
