Description

Built by the Victorians ( boy the were clever ) to carry the Settle - Carlisle railway across the Yorkshire Pennines. It has 24 arches stands 104 ft high and is 440 yards long. Hundreds of railway builders ("navvies") lost their lives building the line, from a combination of accidents, fights, and smallpox outbreaks. In particular, building the Ribblehead (then Batty Moss) viaduct above the moor, caused such loss of life that the railway paid for an expansion of the local graveyard To get an idea of perspective the little red bit under the fourth arch from the right is my wife in her red winter jacket. When we arrived the temperature was minus 2 with a freezing wind. Really needs to be seen in full view

Actually it wasnt my idea to have my wife stand there. If I had a pound for every shot she has got into I would be very rich..but this time it served a purpose. :-)

Great capture and amazing amount of effort and life that went into it. Sobering counterpoint for what is acceptable risk for a job.

i love the sort of fish-eye distortion. it gives me a sense of immense scale in the middle, and immense distance at the ends. your wife does help make it an even grander photo by providing us scale in relation to ourselves.
